Why Should I Optimise My Career Page Content?

Optimising career page content is done simply so that candidates can find you when they are job-hunting. Having a high success rate from your career page content mitigates the need for paying recruiters, and from using third-party job boards - a tiring element of job-hunting is repetition of the same post across so many channels, so as a hiring manager, its best to to be visible on a free-to-use channel everyone already uses, Google Search, and notably on the search engines Jobs For Google job post feature.

What Are The Risks If I Don’t?

Candidates will not find you. The job seeking world is overwhelming, and candidates are applying to positions without knowing if it is a ghost job, or a real opportunity. Candidates will attend interviews, and final stage interviews only for there to be a hiring pause no one tells them about. It is an infuriating process, but hiring managers need to meet candidates half-way - and do this through maximising visibility for their job posts.

Businesses that are highly visible when recruiting will also get the first pick of available candidates, so by not having maximum organic channel visibility, you run the risk of losing out on high-quality candidates.

How Can North West SEO Optimise Your Careers Page Content?

Careers page

Your careers page likely already ranks for ‘[my brand] careers’ and [my brand] jobs’. These branded queries are great for all the candidates who know your company by name. These candidates are likely employed at competitors or they know your company regularly hires staff.

However, quality candidates will also search by role and location - eg ‘seo jobs in Manchester’ or ‘forklift operator job near me’. Your careers page needs to be well-primed for these searches.

Job post pages on Google For Jobs

Candidates should find job posts easily. Job boards are untrustworthy due to the amount of scraped content on them, and not all candidates will see LinkedIn job posts. For this reason, Google Jobs  visibility is essential, and a good SEO will be able to tag up any job posts to meet the technical requirements Google Jobs needs.

Google For Jobs Technical Requirements

A Dedicated Job Post Page

Your website needs to host job posts as their own page to be eligible in Google For Jobs. From there the html of each job post needs to be coded to include JobPost Schema mark-up. This can be done manually, for each job post, but it can be built into the job post page template (using plugins if you use WordPress). If you add the JobPost mark-up at a site level, or at a template level, it should be ‘set it and forget it’.

If your job posts are on a separate domain, Google’s advice is to check that your provider is participating in Google For Jobs.

Google For Jobs Schema Mark-Up

Google For Jobs simply needs Google for Jobs Schema added to the html of a job post for the job post to appear in the search engine’s job board feature. The markup allows you to add details like salary, location, benefits and many more. It is worth stating that transparency with salaries will encourage candidates to click through to your job ad.

Job Post On-Page Best Practices

We have put together a list of best practices for writing up your job post, to ensure candidates click on your result, and also apply directly to you.

  • Utilise JobPost Schema, this provides you visibility in Google’s searches, without requiring posting your ad on mainstream job boards

  • Optimise job titles: in-house the post may be called ‘Logistics Elevation Commander & Palletized Freight Strategist’ but the candidates will be searching for ‘forklift operator’. Don’t lose out on talent because job roles are too introspective.

  • Localise - Add the location to the job title, [job title] in [location]

  • Optimise for skim readers by adding pertinent information at the top. We mean salaries.
